Pregnant Women and Contact Lens Wear

Wow, I remember
pregnancy as being such a fun time of my life. It was full of all kinds of
emotions, I was SO happy
and so conscious of what
I ate and how much I exercised, and the things in the news; was I getting enough
folic acid?  Was I doing all the right things?
Well, I realize that
research changes, and beliefs change but facts don’t change. As far as your
eyes and contact lens wear in pregnancy goes, the rules are the same;
DON”T OVER WEAR YOUR CONTACT LENSES WHEN YOU’RE PREGNANT.
Why? Because we
(doctors) can’t prescribe the same medications that you take when you’re NOT
pregnant as when you ARE pregnant.
So, if you get a corneal
ulcer because you slept in your contacts, there could be serious problems for
your eye, AND your baby.
Over the past few days,
I have been following a case on line of a pregnant patient that slept
in her contacts and the problems doctors are having controlling the
infection.
But what made this
happen in the first place?  The patient had a bunch of excuses, “I don’t
like my glasses”, “They make my nose look big”, “They don’t fit right
“, ” They are just “back up glasses”. WHATEVER!!!
The answer is SIMPLE!!!!
If you have a pair of glasses that you are happy with, you will wear them
then you won’t over wear your contact lenses!!! I know this sounds self serving
in my profession, but anyone that knows me knows, I call it like I see it.
So to bottom line it; IF
YOU ARE PREGNANT, HAVE A PAIR OF GLASSES THAT YOU ARE HAPPY WITH AND YOU WEAR
THEM!!!!
ABOVE ALL, DO NOT SLEEP
IN YOUR CONTACTS IF YOU ARE PREGNANT!!!!!

PLEASE PASS THIS ON!!!!
