The Best Way to Apply Heat:

There are several
conditions which require a patient to apply heat to their eyes, such as pink
eye (conjunctivitis), and styes (hordeolums), as in last week’s blog.

The best heat is moist
heat; either in the shower or over the sink, use a clean wash cloth, get it wet
with warm water and hold on the eye(s), it will cool down in about a minute, so
you have to re-wet it and repeat.
A more efficient (but
not as effective) method is to pour 1/4 cup of uncooked rice into a tube sock (remember
them??) and tie a knot in it. Put it in the microwave and nuke for 30 – 45 sec.  Warning!!! The sock may be
hot! Make sure not to place it on too soon. It could burn you… It will stay warm for about 20 minutes. An easy
rule to remember is the 20/20 rule, 20 minutes on (heat) and 20 minutes off (no
heat).
