Avoiding Pinkeye:

Now that the cold and
flu season is here, it can bring along unwanted germs causing body aches and
pains, and the eye is not immune. Pinkeye, (conjunctivitis), can be caused
by germs, such as viruses and bacteria.
Pinkeye can cause
redness in the whites of the eyes, swelling, itching, tearing and usually has a
discharge. If the infection is caused by a bacteria the discharge is usually
thick and yellowish-green, if the infection is caused by a virus, it is usually
thin and clear.
Some cases of pinkeye
are contagious and can spread easily, so prevention is important. Most eye
infections are not airborne, and are transmitted by contact; therefore, poor
hand-washing is the main culprit of the infections spreading. Sharing things
such as washcloths or bath towels with an infected person can spread it.
If you wear contact
lenses, don’t even think about putting lenses in until after the symptoms are
gone for 24 hours. And always remember to wash your hands when handling lenses.
Remember to wash your
hands after being around someone with flu symptoms, and wash your hands after
being around someone with pinkeye, and wash your hands when you’re around a
sink, and wash your hands……..

In conclusion, keep your
hands clean and away from your eyes!
